Our Vision, Mission, & Goals

National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) envisions a united and vibrant Peace Corps community - one that is mobilized to create social change. To achieve this vision, NPCA champions lifelong commitment to Peace corps Ideals. That means we support all of you - current and returned Peace Corps volunteers, current and former staff, host country nationals, family and friends - in your efforts to create a world that reflects these ideals. NPCA has three specific goals that advance this mission:

  1. Help the Peace Corps be the best that it can be
  2. Enable members and affiliate groups to thrive
  3. Increase the Peace Corps community’s development impact

Organizational Model

After 35 years as a loose association of Peace Corps alumni, NPCA has transformed itself into a mission-driven social impact organization that is mobilizing over 225,000 individuals and more than 165 affiliate groups to act on their Peace Corps ideals. The bylaws, which were established in July 1983 and amended in June 2015 to reflect this change, guide the work of NPCA’s dedicated board of directors and professional staff.

As a 501(c)(3) organization, NPCA operates on a hybrid revenue model balancing tax deductible donations from generous community members and corporate sponsors with income-generating activities that ensure financial sustainability.

Free Membership

NPCA no longer charges a membership fee—it’s free to join for everyone in the Peace Corps community, including currently serving and returned Peace Corps Volunteers, current and former Peace Corps staff, host country nationals, family and friends, and anyone who shares the Peace Corps ideals. Joining NPCA assures voting rights, access to myriad benefits and resources, communication on important issues and events, and pride in being a part of a growing movement.

Mission Partnership

Without dues, NPCA depends on members like you to continue to support the programs and initiatives that mean the most to you! Members who can contribute $50 or more are invited to be partners in NPCA’s mission.

There are two basic pathways to mission partnership:

  • JOIN NPCA and select a "subscription level" - we'll put your contribution to use where it's needed most, we'll automatically remind you each year when it's time to renew.
  • Contribute to NPCA's Community Fund, encompassing several Campaigns that support specific NPCA programs and partnerships.

The Sargent Shriver Leadership Circle designates mission partners who donate at the $1000 level and beyond and provide vital leadership to NPCA.

Strategic Plan

In 2014, its 35th year, NPCA redefined its vision, mission, and strategic goals. The participatory process was critical to address the needs of our core constituencies in the Peace Corps community, ensuring that we offer a clear and compelling value proposition to individual members and affiliate groups. A new strategic plan for 2014-18 emerged from this consultative process.

Going forward, all of NPCA’s programs and services will be closely aligned with our three strategic goals. While these goals echo the vision formulated by our founders in 1981, our plans are based on current realities and concrete actions.

NPCA & Peace Corps — What's the Difference?

The  Peace Corps is a U.S. government agency created on March 1, 1961 via Executive Order 10924 issued by President John Kennedy. The Peace Corps promotes world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals: 1) to help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women; 2) to help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served; and 3) to help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. As of 2017, the Peace Corps had about 7,000 Volunteers and trainees spread across 63 countries and an annual budget of $410 million.

The National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a small professional staff based in Washington, D.C., right across the street from the Peace Corps agency. NPCA serves the entire Peace Corps community, encouraging and celebrating their their lifelong commitment to Peace Corps ideals and building their capacity to make a profound difference in the world.

By design, the Peace Corps and NPCA have a close and cordial relationship that fosters mutual respect and understanding. To solidify this relationship, NPCA signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding with Peace Corps in 2014, which (among other benefits) makes NPCA the only private organization allowed to use the Peace Corps logo and sell Peace Corps branded merchandise. Yet, at appropriate times and when compelled by the community, NPCA exercises its independence and challenges the Peace Corps, publicly and privately, to reform its policies and procedures. This dynamic fosters a spirit of healthy debate and democratic disruption that betters Peace Corps, NPCA, and the community at large.
